“The Retractable Charm: Exploring the BMW E10 1600 Convertible”

The BMW E10 1600 Full Convertible is a rare and beautiful car that combines the classic design of the E10 series with the fun and freedom of a convertible. The E10 series was introduced in 1966 as a successor to the BMW 700, and it featured a new four-cylinder engine, a lightweight body, and a sporty suspension. The E10 1600 was the entry-level model, with a 1.6-liter engine that produced 85 horsepower and 96 lb-ft of torque. It was available as a two-door sedan, a four-door sedan, or a two-door touring (wagon).

But there was also another option: the full convertible. This was not an official BMW model, but rather a custom modification done by some dealers and independent workshops. The full convertible had the entire roof removed, along with the B-pillars and the rear window. A soft top was installed, which could be folded down manually or electrically. The result was a stunning open-air experience that enhanced the driving pleasure of the E10 1600.

The full convertible was not without its drawbacks, however. The removal of the roof compromised the structural rigidity of the car, making it more prone to flexing and rattling. The soft top also added weight and reduced the trunk space. Moreover, the full convertible was not very weatherproof, as the top did not seal well and leaked water and wind noise. And of course, there was the issue of safety: without a roof, the occupants were more exposed to rollover accidents and flying debris.

Despite these challenges, the full convertible was a popular option among enthusiasts who wanted a unique and eye-catching car that stood out from the crowd. Only a few hundred full convertibles were made, making them very rare and collectible today. The full convertible is a testament to the passion and creativity of the BMW fans who dared to transform their E10 1600 into something special.
